// About

Thanks for visiting.  This website is the blog of Andy Davidson, where I write about the things I see, in the roles I have. When I remember to!

I offer this page to provide context and allow readers to understand my motivations, when I post particular observations.  Although I do work for various people, it must be noted that on this website I speak for none of them, and it should always be assumed that these articles are ‘rough cuts’, that do not constitute the policy or opinions of anybody at all.

I am :

  • Director of European Operations for Hurricane Electric, the world’s largest IPv6 backbone.
  • Director of LONAP, the UK’s second exchange, responsible for switching huge volumes of traffic between ISPs in the UK.
  • Co-Chair of the RIPE European Internet Exchange working group, promoting cohesion between providers and users of Internet Exchanges in Europe.
  • Member of the UK Network Operators Forum program committee, the secretariat body of a group formed to assist collaboration between network operators in the UK.
  • Chairing a seedling internet exchange and network co-operation project in Leeds, initiated by Yorkshire Forward, JANET (UK) and several other networks in the Yorkshire region.

Prior to these roles I ran a number of networks and server platforms in e-commerce, telecoms, and certificate authority environments.

Outside of work, I enjoy travel, bad TV, and great food!  But even in my spare time, I still do a lot of busybodying on the internet, producing noise, but sometimes useful noises that get used in proper policy, trying to leave the internet in a more inclusive, more reliable, and more community operated internet than the one I found.  That’s my underlying goal, and I hope that some newcomers to the industry agree with me and make it their goal too.

I am @andyd on twitter, andyda on last.fm and andyd on irc.

Work

I am available for ad-hoc consultancy.  Please contact me for information on pricing and availability.

Talking

I am keen to talk at various events about hands on technical/operations material, tutorials, and also my thoughts on technology strategy.  I speak at a lot of conferences each year and have to try to limit how travel can impact the office-calendar, so I normally need plenty of notice !  You can see some of my slides here.
