Threshers wine promotion
There is a really interesting story brewing, that demonstrates how the internet is used for marketing.
Threshers is a UK based local wine outlet. A week ago, a guy working in the development team in my current contract offered everyone a voucher that his partner had mailed him. The voucher permitted a 40% reduction at the checkout in a Threshers store on wines and champagnes.
Everyone thought this was great, and before long was passing the voucher to their friends and relatives.
It seems that this was going on all over the country. The Radio 4 PM show made a great point last night - that wine is already discounted by up to 33% in this store (it’s normally 3-for-2; so making this a 40% voucher based deal just makes it easier to understand), and the story the store had offered to explain the voucher - ‘it was an exclusive voucher offered to a South African wine maker…. but we’ll honour it, so come and visit the store!’ isn’t quite plausable.
I think the voucher scheme is just a really well executed viral marketing campaign, and shows how even the traditional high street stores can build opportunities online.
